Afghanistan: Islamic State Claim to have Captured Tora Bora Mountains

Taliban refute claims that IS have captured the Tora Bora mountains

The Islamic State (IS) terrorist group have claimed to have captured Osama Bin Laden’s Tora Bora mountain range stronghold, located along the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan. Official Afghans have said that IS militants have seized cave complexes, after days of fighting against the Taliban. The Taliban have refuted such claims and have stated that they are still in control of the mountains, despite heavy ongoing fighting in surrounding villages. IS offensives on Tora Bora come two months after the United States dropped the largest non-nuclear bomb in the world, on as IS camp/hideout in Afghanistan.

It is advisable to be aware of the extensive risks associated with travel in Afghanistan. All non-essential travel is advised against. Avoid all areas within proximity to the eastern border with Pakistan, due to the serious threat of violence, kidnap and terrorism. For essential travel, notify consular authorities and contract a reliable security escort.
