Algeria: Algerian Meteorological Authorities Issue Orange Weather Alerts After Serious Flooding Kills 5
On 28 January, the Algerian Meteorological authorities issued orange weather alerts (the second-highest level on a four-level scale) for heavy rainfall, expected to affect the northern provinces of Bouira, Bejaia, Bordj-Bou-Arreridj, Jijel, Setif, Mila, Skikda, Constantine, Guelma, Souk-Ahras, Tizi Ouzou, Annaba, and El Tarf. The warning comes after the bodies of at least five people were found in above-mentioned regions, following serious flooding between 25-26 January.
Monitor local weather forecasts, prepare for possible transportation disruptions and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities. In the event of flooding, keep in mind that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult. Follow all directives issued by the authorities and maintain a flexible itinerary until the rains pass.
