For the first time in 38 years, 9.3 million Angolans are preparing to elect a new President, as President Santos retires from office. Voting will be open on 23 August from 0600 GMT and will close at 1700 GMT. The first results are expected to be announced on 24 August. Defence Minister Joao Lourenco, the ruling party candidate, is widely expected to win the vote. Election observers from other African countries will monitor the vote, but the European Union (EU) is only sending a small team instead of a full-fledged observer mission. The EU have said this is because the Angolan government wanted to impose restrictions, including limited access to polling stations around the country.
Those operating or residing in Angola are advised to be aware of the Presidential vote. Remain aware for signs of increased tensions and avoid all large gatherings of people, due to the credible risk of violent clashes. Leave the vicinity if seek shelter if the security environment escalates. When the results of the election are announced, there may be both celebrations and protests in the streets.
