Islamic State (IS) has claimed responsibility for a hostage situation, which left two men dead, including the gunman, and three police officers wounded. The situation unfolded in a Buckingham Serviced Apartment in Brighton when Yacqub Khayre, a man previously charged over an alleged terrorist plot, killed a man and took another woman hostage. Khayre reportedly called up a TV newsroom during the siege and stated, “This is for IS, this is for al-Qaeda.” The hostage situation came to an end after the gunman stepped out of a hotel room and fired at officers, injuring three, before himself being killed in the exchange.
Those operating or residing in Australia are advised to be aware of the threat of terrorism. The government has previously warned of the potential for Islamic extremists to return home. Take care when visiting densely populated tourist areas. Report any suspicious packages, behaviour or activity to the authorities and remain vigilant.
