Bangladesh: 2 Militants Killed in Security Operation
On 29 April, at least 2 suspected militants were killed in a security operation. Gunfire broke out in the Mohammadpur area of Dhaka as members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) were conducting a raid on an alleged militant hideout. During the operation an explosion occurred killing the two. Security forces believe that the men may have been members of Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB). Further security operations in Dhaka are likely in the near term.
Since September 2015, ISIL and ISIL-linked groups have orchestrated several attacks in Bangladesh. In March 2017, Islamic State claimed responsibility for two failed suicide attacks within close proximity to Dhaka’s Shahjalal International Airport. In August 2017, a terrorist detonated explosive in his room at the Hotel Olio International in Dhaka after being raided by police. Authorities suspect he was planning to attack a procession at the nearby Bangabandhu Memorial Museum. Foreign nationals, religious minorities, writers, bloggers, publishers, human rights and LGBTI activists are typically high priority targets.
Be aware of the high threat of terrorism in Bangladesh. If you do decide to travel, remain on high alert and monitor local media for additional security information. Report any suspicious packages, activity or behaviour to the local authorities.
