The European Court of Human Rights has upheld a Belgian ban on wearing the full-face niqab veil in public spaces. The court held that the restriction aims to guarantee social cohesion, the ‘protection of the rights and freedoms of others’ and that it was ‘necessary in democratic society.’ The full-face niqab was originally banned under June 2011 Law. The law prohibits anyone from appearing in public ‘with a face masked or hidden, in whole or in part, in such a way as to be unidentifiable.’
Those who operate or reside in Belgium are advised to be aware of the ban on the full-face niqab veil. It is advisable to act accordingly within the guidelines of the law.
