Benin: Internet Disruptions Reported Amid Protests in Cotonou
During the evening of 1 May, violent protests were reported near Haie Vive in Cotonou after the initial results of the April 28 elections were announced. There were disruptions to overland travel, with demonstrators erecting barricades and burning tyres, blocking the roads from Place de Martyrs to the Vedeko roundabout. As of 2 May, tensions remain high in the country, with partial disruptions to internet service being reported nationwide. The Beninese government has issued a statement on social media warning its citizens to avoid sharing “fake news.” Further service disruptions are possible in the coming hours and days. A heightened security presence and localised disruptions to overland travel are likely in the vicinity of any protests.
