Brasil Popular and Povo Sem Medo activist group members have called for nationwide anti-government demonstrations to take place in capital cities across the country on 21 May. Major protests are planned in Sao Paulo Avenida Paulista from 14:00 local time and in Rio de Janeiro’s Posto 5 and Brasilia’s Congress from 10:00 local time. The protests are in response to alleged accusations of corruption against the government and President Temer. The President has been accused of authorising the payment of bribes to silence a witness in a huge corruption scandal. The President has denied all allegations and maintained that he will not resign.
Those operating or residing in Brazil are advised to be aware of planned protests throughout the country on 21 May. Anticipate associated disruptions to travel in proximity to the above-mentioned areas and plan your travel accordingly in order to avoid delays to your journey. Avoid all large gatherings of people as there is the potential for violent protest-related clashes and detention by security forces.
