Brazil: New App Tracks Attacks in Rio de Janeiro

2,329 murders recorded in the first five months of 2017

Gun violence, murder and crime is increasing in Rio de Janeiro. In the first five months of 2017, the numbers of murders increased by 11% to 2,329 compared to the same period of last year. The number of people killed by police in shootouts during the first five months of this year jumped nearly 50 per cent compared to the same months the previous year, totalling 480 deaths. Amnesty International have created new apps which can now track in real time where gun battles are taking place, in the hope of keeping people out of danger. The data comes from eyewitness, media and police accounts. The apps both work using a live mapping system that notes down the locations of incidents as reports come in. Each shooting includes details on the time, date and number of fatalities. The map even reveals how many gang members, civilians and police officers died in each firefight, as well as whether anyone was injured in the crossfire.

Those planning to travel to or within Brazil are reminded to exercise caution due to the high risk of homicides, kidnappings, carjacking’s, robberies and drug related violence. Maintain a heightened sense of vigilance and awareness of your surroundings. Limit travel to areas frequented by tourists and avoid all situations in which you may become isolated.
