The US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a warning for Burundi advising travellers to increase their Malaria prevention measures. The warning comes as the total number of cases since January 2017 rose to 1,960,620, with 869 confirmed deaths. The worst affected areas include Gitega, Kirundo, Muyinga, Karusi, Kayanza, Ngosi, Ruyigi, Cankuzo and Cibitoko states.
Those operating or residing in Burundi are advised to consult medical professionals about the use of antimalarial drugs prior to travel. Take measures to avoid being bitten, including using insect repellent and bed nets. Be particularly careful when travelling to the above-mentioned states.
