Cameroon: Avoid Possible Protests on 8,9 February
On 28 January, the leader of the Cameroon Renaissance Movement (CRM) party, Maurice Kamto, was arrested in Douala along with other key party figures, several journalists and 117 supporters. On 30 January, Kamto was charged with ‘hostility against the Fatherland, insurrection, group rebellion and public disorder.’ His trial has been postponed until 15 February.
Despite a ban by the Cameroonian government, demonstrations by supporters of the CRM party are likely to take place in Yaoundé and Douala on Friday 8 and Saturday 9 February. No further details have yet been released in regard to times and specific locations. A heightened security presence is likely in both cities and violent clashes between security forces and protesters are possible due to the ban on protests.
