Cameroon: Presidential Inauguration to Take Place on 6 November
On 22 October, the Cameroonian Constitutional Court announced that incumbent President Paul Biya had won the 7 October presidential elections with 71.28% of votes cast. Since Biya’s victory, there have been several well-attended protests organised by supporters of CRM opposition leader Maurice Kamto. Kamto has announced a “national resistance programme” and weeklong protests to challenge Biya’s victory, vowing to sabotage the President’s swearing-in ceremony on 6 November.
Kamto’s opposition CRM party have called for protest rallies in Yaoundé and other major cities nationwide on 6 November, when President Biya will be sworn in for a seventh term. Rally locations will include governor and senior divisional offices. A heightened security presence and associated transportation disruptions should be anticipated in the vicinity of any demonstration; clashes between security forces and protesters cannot be ruled out.
