Chad: US Department of State Advises Against Travel in Chad

Avoid travel in Chad due to ongoing tensions and terrorist activity

On 6 June, the US Department of State updated its travel warning for Chad, advising of ongoing tensions and potential terrorist activity throughout the country. All travel to the border regions should be avoided, particularly near to the Lake Chad region, where a state of emergency has been routinely extended. Violent extremist organisations in the region, such as Boko Haram and the Islamic State of Iraq and Ash-Sham –West Africa (ISIS-WA), can easily cross borders and target foreigners, local security forces and civilians. In May 2017, Boko Haram attacked a Chadian military base in the Lake Chad region. In addition, kidnapping for ransom is common in the region.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office advises against all travel to areas of Chad within 30km of the border with Cameroon, to within 30km of Lake Chad and to parts of Kanem and Lac regions to the west of the towns of Mao and Bol. A state of emergency remains in place for the Lake Chad region. Avoid all non-essential travel to Sila, Wadi Fira and Ouaddaï due to the high threat of terrorism, violence and kidnapping.

It is advisable to take heed of the travel warning issued by consular representations and to avoid all non-essential travel in Chad to the above areas listed, due to the high threat of terrorism, violence and kidnapping. Attacks can be indiscriminate in nature, including in places frequented by foreigners. Before considering travel in Chad, seek professional security advice.
