Chad: US Embassy in N’Djamena Issues Security Message

Increase of armed robbery and petty crime in N'Djamena

On 21 June, the US Embassy in N’Djamena issued a security message to inform travellers of an uptick in armed robberies and petty crime in the city. “The Embassy has received multiple reports of armed robberies in the immediate vicinity of restaurants, hotels, and popular establishments in N’Djamena. Several U.S. citizens have been injured in these robberies, which involved weapons such as knives and firearms.”

The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advises against all travel to areas of Chad within 30km of the border with Cameroon, to within 30km of Lake Chad and to parts of Kanem and Lac regions to the west of the towns of Mao and Bol. A state of emergency remains in place for the Lake Chad region. Avoid all non-essential travel to Sila, Wadi Fira and Ouaddaï due to the high threat of terrorism, violence and kidnapping. Attacks can be indiscriminate in nature, including in places frequented by foreigners. Before considering travel in Chad, seek professional security advice.
