15 people have been confirmed dead and at least 120 are still missing, after a deadly landslide in Sichuan province in south-western China. Up to 40 homes were destroyed in Xinmo village in Maoxian county, after the side of a mountain collapsed. The government has sent 3,000 rescuers, along with equipment, to the area and has promised to do all it can to look for survivors while restricting access for safety reasons. Hundreds are thought to have died. Sichuan province is also prone to earthquakes. In 2008, an earthquake measuring 8.0 killed nearly 70,000 people.
Those operating or residing in Sichuan are advised to avoid all travel to Xinmo village whilst rescue operations are underway. The area is not deemed safe for access and tens of houses are still buried under the landslide. Follow local media for up to date developments regarding the death toll from the disaster.
