Dissident rebels of the demobilising Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) briefly detained five US, French and Spanish tourists in the Jirijirio area alongside the Apaporis river, located near to the border with Brazil in Pacoa municipality in Vaupes department between 22-23 April. The foreign nationals were later released by the FARC rebels.
Those who plan to travel within Colombia are advised to contract a local security guide, to vary itineraries and to avoid government personnel across rural areas where dissident FARC groups and members still operate. Although the FARC is in the process of demobilising, the threat of kidnap and violence still remains across much of the country. FARC groups are said to still operate in Vaupes, Vichada, Guaviare, Guainía and Caquetá departments.
