Colombia: IDEAM Issue Red Alert
On 8 October, the Colombian weather service, IDEAM, issued red alerts - the highest warning level - for various areas in the country due to the risk of flooding and landslides amid heavy rains, notably along rivers. The alerts were issued for the parts of the departments of Nariño, Chocó, Meta, Arauca and Cesar. Lower orange alerts for flooding and/or landslides are in place in various other parts of the country. Flooding and landslides are common in Colombia during the rainy seasons, which typically occur between October-November and April-May.
Residents or travellers are warned to prepare for possible further flooding. Rearrange any travel routes to avoid the worst affected areas. Monitor local media for more information regarding the flooding. Follow all directives issued by the authorities and maintain a flexible itinerary until the floods pass.
