Cote D’Ivoire: Violent Protesting Takes Place in Abidjan
On 7 January, violent protests erupted in the Abobo-Doumé area of Abidjan, after hundreds of people took to the streets to demand that the newly elected mayor of Plateau commune, Jacques Ehouo, be allowed to take office. Ehouo was elected as mayor of Plateau commune during elections in October 2018. His inauguration has been postponed due to a corruption court case that has been filed against him. Protesters erected barricades along roads and blocked ferry terminals connecting Abobo-Doumé to Plateau. Police officers used tear gas to disperse the demonstrators. Further protests are possible in the coming hours and days; clashes between security forces and protesters cannot be ruled out.
