DRC: 33 More Ebola Deaths

Another outbreak of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has resulted in 33 deaths, with the health ministry reporting up to 43 people may have contracted the virus across north-eastern North Kivu province and neighbouring Ituri province. Almost 900 "contacts" - people who may have come into contact with an infected person - have been registered by the health ministry. Vaccinations are being deployed to the city of Beni in North Kivu province, which borders Uganda and Rwanda.

The latest deaths come three years after some 11,000 people were killed across six countries. Ebola is considered to be one of the most lethal pathogens in existence and the new outbreak has been branded a 'public health emergency'. Those operating or residing in the DRC are advised to be aware of a possible outbreak of Ebola. The DRC is well practiced in dealing with the virus, having had at least ten outbreaks since 1976. Authorities will act quickly to ensure that the virus does not spread to more populated areas, as it is currently confined in a remote location in the north-east. Consult your doctor before travelling and follow the advice of the authorities.
