Reroute any travel plans to avoid Kinshasa during times of protest

The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has issued updated travel advice for the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to warn of possible protests on 21 August. “Protests may occur in Kinshasa and surrounding areas on Monday 21 August; you should avoid areas where demonstrations may take place and monitor local media and this advice for updates.” The warning comes after Mwanda Nsemi, the leader of the Bundu dia Kongo (BDK) movement, called on his followers to revolt against the government across the DRC, specifically in Kinshasa. Although the BDK's threat is nationwide, the religious sect is most active in Kinshasa, specifically the capital's Ngaliema area and Kongo Central Province. DRC police are likely to deploy additional security personnel in the capital, notably, near prisons, police stations, government buildings and on major roads, such as Boulevard Triomphal (N1 highway). In the past, police have used force, tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse crowds and protesters.

Reroute any travel plans to avoid Kinshasa during times of protest. Avoid large demonstrations, public gatherings and official buildings. Should a demonstration take place, leave quickly and do not attempt to photograph or watch it. Exercise caution when travelling in rural areas across the DRC and avoid travelling to the above-mentioned areas. There is a high threat of violence, kidnap and murder. Contract a private security escort with local experience for the purposes of business-critical travel.
