DRC: Over 1000 People Killed by Ongoing Ebola Outbreak
On 5 May, the Congolese Ministry of Health reported a total of 1554 cases from Ebola virus disease (EVD) in North Kivu and Ituri provinces, which have resulted in at least 1029 deaths. The World Health Organisation (WHO) reported that officials are anticipating increased levels of transmission following a record 126 confirmed cases in seven days at the end of April and early May.
Attacks on Ebola treatment centres have hindered efforts to contain the disease and further cases are likely in the near term. There remains a risk of regional transmission give the region's high level of insecurity, porous borders, transient population, and continued attacks on treatment centres and health workers.
