Police in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) have arrested over 100 people, as they cracked down on those attending anti-Kabila protests across the country. 57 were detained in the eastern city of Goma, 24 in the capital Kinshasa and dozens more in seven other cities. Demonstrations have intensified this week, calling for President Kabila to step down from power by the end of the year. The demonstrations have been banned by Congolese authorities. Kabila’s mandate expired last December and his refusal to step down has fuelled violence, protests and insecurity in the DRC.
Reroute any travel plans to avoid Kinshasa and other major cities during times of protest. Avoid large demonstrations, public gatherings and official buildings. Should a demonstration take place, leave quickly and do not attempt to photograph or watch it. Exercise caution when travelling in rural areas across the DRC and avoid travelling to the above-mentioned areas. There is a high threat of violence, kidnap and murder. Contract a private security escort with local experience for the purposes of business-critical travel.
