Egypt: Bomb Blast Kills 9 In North Sinai

9 killed and 4 injured in roadside bombing and shooting

At least nine people were reportedly killed, including a police officer, after a roadside bomb exploded in the Sinai Peninsula on 19 July. The explosive device was hit by a police vehicle south of the city of Arish. Unidentified gunmen then opened fire on the vehicle, killing eight civilians who were nearby and injuring four others. Although no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, Islamic State are known to have a strong presence in the Sinai Peninsula and frequently carry out attacks on both civilians and security forces. The Peninsula has been the epicentre of a deadly militant insurgency since 2013, when former President Morsi was ousted in a military coup. Since then, hundreds of Egyptian security personnel have been killed in attacks across the volatile region, especially in north-eastern Sinai, which shares borders with Israel and the blockaded Gaza Strip.

Those operating or residing in Egypt are advised to refrain from all travel in North and South Sinai governorates and to avoid travelling near to security and government forces, infrastructure and personnel. ISIS are known to have a stronghold in the Sinai Peninsula and frequently kidnap and murder people. Report any suspicious packages, behaviour or activity to the authorities and remain vigilant.
