Egypt: Egyptian Military Kill At Least 46 Militants in North Sinai
On 11 March, Egyptian authorities announced that their military soldiers had killed at least 46 militants during security anti-terrorism operations in North Sinai province. Three soldiers were also killed. Similar security operations are likely in North Sinai province in the coming days and weeks.
The Egyptian government has been fighting an Islamic State (IS) insurgency in the Peninsula for years. IS have been responsible for several large-scale terrorist attacks during this time and dozens of attacks on military officials and checkpoints. Avoid all travel in North and South Sinai governorates and to refrain from travelling near to security and government forces, infrastructure and personnel and to religious infrastructure or places of worship. Islamic State are known to have a stronghold in the Sinai Peninsula and carry out terror attacks at an alarming rate. Attacks on security forces have been frequent in the Peninsula since the army ousted the Muslim Brotherhood from power in 2013.
