Egypt: Foreigners Stabbed in Hurghada Tourist Resort

Two killed and four others injured in stabbing attack

On 14 July, two German tourists were killed and another four stabbed and injured at the Zahabia hotel in Hurghada, Egypt. The assailant then swam to a nearby beach and attacked and wounded two more people at the Sunny Days El Palacio resort, before he was overpowered by staff and arrested. The attacker is said to have shouted, “Go away, I don’t want you Egyptians, you are not wanted.” The motive for the attack is currently being investigated. Three foreign tourists were stabbed at the same resort in January 2016, by two suspected Islamic State (IS) militants.

The attack came after five police officers were shot dead at a checkpoint in Badrashen in Cairo's twin city of Giza, when suspected Islamic militants opened fire on their vehicle early on Friday morning.

The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office states that terrorists are very likely to try to carry out attacks in Egypt and tourists should be vigilant at all times, avoid crowded places and follow the advice of the Egyptian authorities and their travel company. There have been threats to western nationals, institutions and businesses posted on websites and social media. Those operating or residing in Egypt are advised to be aware of the current security environment in the country. Islamic State have carried out a number of deadly attacks in recent months and have intensified their war against Christians. Remain alert when visiting any densely-populated tourist or Christian destinations. Report any suspicious packages, behaviour or activity to the authorities and remain vigilant.
