Egypt: Reminder of Risks Associated with Travel in Egypt

Travellers are reminded of the high threat of terrorism in Egypt

The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade's Smartraveller service has issued updated travel advice regarding Egypt, advising “against all travel within 50kms of Egypt's border with Libya due to the high threat of terrorist attack and threat posed by militants and violent criminals. Travellers are reminded of the high threat of terrorism in Egypt. Terrorist attacks could occur at any time, including in tourist areas and around religious sites. Maintain heightened vigilance at tourist locations and crowded public places. The level of our advice has not changed. Reconsider your need to travel to Egypt.”

Following a spate of deadly attacks, including on Christians and Christian churches and cathedrals, Egypt is operating under a state of emergency. Bomb and gun attacks have taken place in locations across Egypt outside of the Sinai Peninsula. Attacks against travellers continue to pose a threat. Report any suspicious packages, activity or behaviour to the local authorities and remain vigilant.
