Ethiopia: Intense Fighting Continues Over Border Disputes

Security forces block road from Addis Ababa to Jijiga, between Babile and Harar

On 11 August, the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade's Smartraveller service issued updated travel advice for Ethiopia. “Since 10 August 2017, the main road from Addis Ababa to Jijiga, between Babile and Harar, has been blocked by security forces due to intense fighting over border disputes. Avoid travel between Babile and Harar. In 2016, a US national travelling by car was killed by rocks thrown by protestors on the road from Holeta to Addis Ababa. In the past, buses have been attacked outside Addis Ababa. Continue to monitor local media and avoid all large gatherings and protests as the security situation may change at short notice.”

Those who plan to travel in Ethiopia are advised to take heed of the above warning and to avoid the above-mentioned areas. Plan your travel accordingly. When travelling outside Addis Ababa, consider travelling in a party and leave details of your travel itinerary with a reliable person. Carry a comprehensive medical pack. Telephones, including the sole mobile network, are unreliable. Consider the use of a security escort.
