The US Centre for Disease Control (CDC) has issued an alert to warn of an outbreak of Dengue fever in the South Pacific archipelago of Fiji. Between January and April 2017, 913 laboratory-confirmed cases were identified in Fiji, including one fatality. As such, the Ministry of Health and Medical Services declared an outbreak. Most of the cases were recorded on the main island of Viti Levu. The CDC says there is no vaccine or medicine currently available in the United States to prevent or treat dengue, which is transmitted to people through mosquito bites.
Those operating or residing in Fiji are advised to be aware of a Dengue fever outbreak. Take measures to prevent against mosquito bites; wear long sleeves and trousers, use insect repellent, spray living and sleeping areas with insecticide and use a mosquito net wherever possible. Ensure you have access to a sufficient supply of clean water, food and medicine for the duration of your stay.
