France: 7 Injured in Paris Stabbing Attack
On 9 September, at least 7 people were injured after a man wielding a knife attacked and stabbed people on the banks of a canal in Paris's 19th district. Bystanders tried to stop the attacker by throwing petanque balls at him. The assailant, who is said to have been of Afghan origin, was later arrested. French security forces are not currently treating the attack as an act of terrorism. The man is believed to have mental and drug issues.
Those operating or residing in France are advised to be aware of the threat of Islamic extremism in the country. Whilst the police have reportedly ruled out a political or religious motive, France has been the target of numerous Islamic extremist attacks in the past years and the country is on high alert, with more than 240 people killed in jihadist attacks since the massacre at the Charlie Hebdo satirical magazine in Paris in January 2015. Report any suspicious packages, activity or behaviour to the local authorities and remain vigilant.
