France: Anti-Macron Demonstration in Paris Descends into Riot
Anti-Macron protests turn into riots in Paris
Following the victory of Emmanuel Macron, a demonstration by supporters of right-wing candidate Le Pen turned into a riot. On 8 May, thousands of communist and revolutionary groups gathered at the Place de la Republique, protesting against what they classed as Macron’s ‘capitalist’ agenda of employment and benefits reform. They clashed with heavily armed riot police, who used batons and tear gas against the protesters in the centre of Paris.
Those operating or residing in France are advised to be aware of further possible anti-Macron demonstrations in the capital. Protests often descend into violence in France, with the police using tear gas to supress demonstrators. Avoid all large crowds and gatherings of people, due to the credible risk of protest related violence and incidental detention by the authorities.
