On 22 July, supporters of the former President Yahya Jammeh are planning to commemorate the 1994 coup d’état that brought him to power. The current Barrow government has refused to grant permission for the celebrations to go ahead. The demonstrations are nonetheless expected to take place at Arch 22 in Banjul.
Confrontation between Jammeh supporters, security forces and Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) troops should not be ruled out. Anticipate heightened security and avoid all large gatherings of people due to the credible threat of protest-related violence and incidental detention by security forces. Leave the vicinity if tensions escalate and seek safe shelter.
