German security forces have used water cannons and pepper spray against hard-core anti-capitalist protesters, as they rioted in Hamburg ahead of the G20 Summit. The protesters reportedly attacked police officers with stone, bottles and bricks. The violence broke out near the start of the demonstration at a riverside plaza used for Hamburg's weekly fish market. Up to 100,000 protesters are expected to attend the ‘Welcome to Hell’ protest over the coming days. Police have estimated that as many as 8000 are prepared to use violence.
Those operating or residing in Hamburg are advised to anticipate disruptions to overland travel in the coming days due to ongoing protests. Plot an alternative route in order to avoid delays to your journey. Avoid all protests and demonstrations, due to the credible risk of protest-related violence and detention by security forces. Seek safe shelter if tensions further escalate.
