On 6 October, at least 12 people were killed and 188 injured after an earthquake measuring 5.9 struck off the northwest coast of Haiti, approximately 20km west-northwest of Port-de-Paix. Minor damages to buildings and infrastructure were reported in the city. Transportation disruptions are possible in the area in the coming days as recovery efforts continue. A second minor 5.2 magnitude aftershock was reported 16 km northwest of Port-de-Paix at approximately on 7 October 7. Further, more powerful aftershocks cannot be ruled out.
Earthquakes are relatively common in Haiti, which sits along the Enriquillo-Plantain Garden fault zone. The country registered 26 quakes between 2.9 and 4.6 on the Richter scale during the first eight months of this year alone. Haiti is still recovering from a 7.0-magnitude earthquake in 2010. Be prepared for further aftershocks. Adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
