Hong Kong/Macau: Prepare for the Arrival of Typhoon Hato

Authorities advise of high winds, heavy rain and storm surges

The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade's Smartraveller service has issued updated travel advice to advise, “Typhoon Hato is projected to affect Hong Kong/Macau from 23 August 2017. Expect high winds, heavy rain and storm surges in coastal areas. A typhoon level 10 warning is in force. Local safety procedures require businesses and transportation to close during typhoon level 8 and above…Anticipate disruptions to essential services and transport. Contact your tour provider or airline for latest information on disruptions and follow the instructions issued by local authorities.”

Monitor alerts issued by the Central Weather Bureau and follow the advice of the local authorities, including any evacuation orders. Avoid coastal and low-lying areas. Follow all directives issued and maintain a flexible itinerary until the typhoon passes. Flash floods and landslides are possible following heavy rainfall; maintain heightened awareness of surroundings.
