At least 10 people have been killed, 15 injured and 20 trapped, after a four-storey residential building collapsed in a densely populated area of Bhendi Bazaar in Mumbai on 30 August. The building is thought to have collapsed after several days of heavy rain inundated the city. Rescue diggers have been seen trying to sift through the rubble to rescue at least 20 who are believed to be trapped. Thirteen injured have been rescued from the rubble. Two firemen also have been injured during the rescue operations. Building collapses are common in India, especially during the monsoon season from late June to September.
Those operating or residing in Bhendi Bazaar are advised to be aware of ongoing rescue operations. Avoid the area in the near term and reroute your travel plans. Be aware of the potential for old and unstable buildings to collapse, especially following bouts of heavy rain, which can damage the foundations.
