The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade's Smartraveller service has issued updated travel advice to advise, “The states of Haryana and Punjab, and the Union Territory of Chandigarh have been put on high alert for possible violence and civil unrest in anticipation of the delivery of a verdict in relation to a high-profile court case against the head of Dera Sancha Sauda spiritual organisation on 25 August 2017. High alerts and a ban on unauthorised gatherings are in place in Chandigarh and parts of Haryana and Punjab. Avoid large gatherings and follow the advice of local authorities. Local transport, including local road and rail travel may be significantly disrupted during this period. Monitor the media for developments that may affect your safety and security.”
