Jakarta authorities have announced a total ban on all mass gatherings in the lead up to and during the gubernational elections on 19 April. The announcement came in response to a planned ‘Tamasya Al Maidha’ or Al Maidah Tour rally organised through social media by conservative groups, who planned to gather as polling stations across the country to ‘safeguard’ them. Despite such calls for bans on gatherings, it is highly likely that tensions will escalate on the day of elections and violent clashes between opposing groups should not be ruled out.
Those operating or residing in Indonesia are advised to anticipate heightened security around polling stations through the 19 April. Avoid all large public gatherings due to the credible risk of protest-related violence and seek shelter at the first signs of escalating tensions.
