Following the ‘guilty’ conviction of Jakarta governor Ahok for blasphemy, over 1000 people gathered outside the City Hall building on Jalan Medan Merdeka Selatan in Jakarta, chanting slogans and singing songs in support of the former governor. Ahok has been sentenced to two years’ imprisonment for alleged blasphemy. The scandal has seen mass protests of tens of thousands of hard-line Muslims in Jakarta.
Those operating or residing in Jakarta are advised to be aware that further protests of the ruling by Ahok supporters and counter rallies by Islamist groups cannot be ruled out in the near term. Counter-rallies by Islamist groups may also be possible. Avoid all protests and large gatherings of people due to the credible risk of protest-related violence.
