Iran: Iranian Authorities Foil Planned ISIS Attack

27 arrested as authorities foil suspected Islamic State plot

Iran’s State News Agency (IRNA) has reported that Iranian security forces have foiled a planned attack by a group linked to Islamic State (IS). The group was planning attacks in religious centres across the country and were using home appliances to hide their weapons. The operation was reportedly conducted jointly with another country and has resulted in the arrest of 27 suspects. Islamic State have targeted Iran before, claiming responsibility for a recent attack in June 2017 on the Iranian parliament and Ayatollah Khomeini's mausoleum in Tehran, killing 18 people. They have also routinely threatened Iran’s majority Shiite population.

Those operating or residing in Tehran are advised to be aware of the recent Islamic State claimed attacks. The recent arrests and foiling of a terror plot is indicative of the fact that Islamic State have a presence within Iran and intend to cause harm to Iranian people and infrastructure. Seek safe shelter if further attacks take place. Monitor the local news and follow the instruction of the authorities. Report any suspicious packages, behaviour or activity to the authorities and remain vigilant.
