Iraq: US Embassy Issues Security Message
US Embassy warns of threat of kidnap
On 10 August, the US Embassy in Iraq issued a security message. “U.S. Embassy Baghdad is aware of reports of threats to target U.S. government officials and other civilians for kidnapping. In response, the U.S. Embassy has temporarily restricted movement of its employees outside of the international zone in Baghdad, as well as outside of U.S. Consulate Basrah. As a reminder, U.S. citizens should maintain a heightened sense of security awareness and take appropriate measures to enhance their personal security at all times when living and working in Iraq."
Those who plan to travel to or within Iraq are advised to maintain a heightened sense of security and to take the appropriate measures to enhance their personal security at all times, due to the serious threat of kidnapping and terrorist violence in the country. Be aware of the potential for both indiscriminate and planned coordinated terror attacks to take place. Take particular care when in proximity to areas populated with westerners.
