Presidential candidates in Kenya have re-engaged in the campaign trail, after the Supreme Court annulled last month's result and ordered a new election. Opposition supporters are still celebrating in Nairobi, as many attended rallies and demonstrations for the former prime minister Raila Odinga. No date has yet been announced for the official re-run. The nullification of the previous election result is being seen as “justice” by millions of Odinga’s supporters. Many supporters of the current ruling party believe they have been cheated of victory and are also rallying in and around the city of Nairobi.
Those operating or residing in Kenya are advised to anticipate possible protest-related activity. Kenya experienced significant post-election violence in 2007. Rallies, demonstrations and protests may occur with little notice and even those intended to be peaceful can escalate into violence. As with all large events, there is also the opportunity for criminal elements or terrorists to target participants and visitors. Avoid all large gatherings of people and seek shelter if tensions further escalate.
