At least five people have been killed in protests, after Kenya’s opposition claimed that the polls were fraudulently hacked in favour of the President. As well as the deaths, police have used tear gas and shot at supporters of the opposition leader in the port city of Kisumu. The opposition leader has said that he could not reveal his sources on how he got the information on the alleged hacking.
Those operating or residing in Kenya are advised to anticipate further protest-related violence. Kenya experienced pre-electoral violence in cycles since 1992 and significant post-election violence in 2007. Rallies, demonstrations and protests may occur with little notice and even those intended to be peaceful can escalate into violence. As with all large events, there is also the opportunity for criminal elements or terrorists to target participants and visitors. Avoid all large gatherings of people and seek shelter if tensions further escalate.
