On 25 July, the US Embassy in Nairobi issued a security message. “Kenya is scheduled to hold elections August 8, 2017. Kenyans will vote for more than 1,800 offices across 47 counties, and campaigning for local and national offices is fully underway. Kenya has experienced some pre-electoral violence in cycles since 1992 and significant post-election violence in 2007. Rallies, demonstrations, and protests may occur with little notice, and even those intended to be peaceful can escalate into violence. As with all large events, there is also the opportunity for criminal elements or terrorists to target participants and visitors. You should avoid areas of gatherings, protests, and demonstrations, and exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of any such events.”
