Kenya: US Embassy Issues Security Alert

US Embassy advises travellers to avoid the streets during announcement of a decision concerning the Presidential petition

On 28 August, the US Embassy in Nairobi issued a security message, stating “The Kenyan Supreme Court is expected to announce a decision on the Presidential petition on Friday, September 1. The announcement may be followed by the formation of large crowds throughout Nairobi and in other areas of Kenya. We strongly advise that you stay off the streets during the announcement and in the hours following it, and monitor local news for updated information.”

Those operating or residing in Kenya are advised to anticipate possible protest-related activity. Kenya experienced significant post-election violence in 2007. Rallies, demonstrations and protests may occur with little notice and even those intended to be peaceful can escalate into violence. As with all large events, there is also the opportunity for criminal elements or terrorists to target participants and visitors. Avoid all large gatherings of people and seek shelter if tensions further escalate.
