A controversial referendum to amend the constitution has been scheduled to take place on 5 August. The proposed amendments include the abolition of the Senate and the High Court of Justice and the introduction of a proportional representation electoral system. A proposal to enable President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz to run for a third term was abandoned following outrage and protests.
Anticipate political rallies in the lead up to 5 August and particularly once the results are announced. Avoid all protest action. Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and quickly escalate into violence. Avoid areas where demonstrations are taking place and exercise caution when in the vicinity of any large gatherings.
