Mexico: Hundreds Protest Against US Activists Assassination in Teocelo, Veracruz State
300 protest as environmental activist is killed in Teocelo
On 7 May, at least 300 people protested outside of the Municipal Palace in Teocelo, Veracruz State, against the assassination of a United States environmental activist. The man was killed by unknown gunmen at his home in the city three days prior, on 4 May. Further protests related to his death are possible in the near-term.
Activists are frequently targeted and assassinated by organised criminal groups in Mexico. Those planning to travel to or within Mexico are reminded to exercise caution due to the high risk of homicides, kidnappings, carjacking’s, robberies and drug related violence. Maintain a heightened sense of vigilance and awareness of your surroundings. Limit travel to areas frequented by tourists and avoid all situations in which you may become isolated.
