Netherlands: US Embassy Alert Concerning UEFA Soccer Championship

Expect increased security due to the possibility of an attack

On 17 July, the US Embassy in Amsterdam issued a security message concerning the EUFA Soccer Championships. “The United States government is aware of a threat to this year’s UEFA Women’s Euro 2017 Soccer Championship taking place at various venues throughout the Netherlands from July 16 – August 6. U.S. authorities are working closely with their Dutch counterparts to address the threat. Spectators should expect an increased security presence at the various venues. When attending events where large crowds gather, please be aware of the increased risk to your safety. Review your personal security plans; remain aware of your surroundings, and monitor media and local information sources for updates. Factor updated information into personal travel plans and activities. Address specific safety concerns to Dutch law enforcement authorities who are responsible for the safety of all visitors to the Netherlands. In line with the Europe Travel Alert, extremists continue to focus on tourist locations, transportation hubs, markets/shopping malls, and local government facilities as viable targets. In addition, hotels, clubs, restaurants, places of worship, parks, high-profile events, educational institutions, airports, and other soft targets remain priority locations for possible attacks. Credible information indicates terrorist groups continue to plot possible attacks in Europe."
