On 5 December, the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade's Smartraveller service issued updated travel advice for New Caledonia. “On 5 December 2018 a 7.5 magnitude earthquake hit near New Caledonia. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre has issued a warning. It advises hazardous tsunami waves may affect the east coast of New Caledonia and the Isle of Pines and Loyalty Islands. Follow the instructions of local authorities and move to higher ground. The level of our advice has not changed. Exercise normal safety precautions in New Caledonia.”
