New Zealand: State of Emergency Declared as Wildfires Spread In South Island
On 6 February, wildfires continued to spread in New Zealand, forcing more than 100 homes to be evacuated in the city of Nelson in the South Island. The fires started around 14:00 on 5 February due to an extensive hot period, “breaking 30 degrees Celsius on a regular basis in the northern half of the South Island”.
Those operating or residing on the South Island are advised to be aware of the on-going major forest fire on the outskirts of Nelson. Re-route any travel plans to avoid the worst affected areas and remain vigilant. Monitor local media for more advice and follow all directives issued by local authorities until the fires are over.
