Nigeria: Anti-Government Protest to Take Place in Abuja
On 28 January, another anti-government protest is expected to take place in Abuja to denounce the recent dismissal of chief justice, Walter Onnoghen. Onnoghen was suspended on January 25 after being accused of false assets declaration. He is expected to challenge its suspension in court later today. Protesters will likely gather at the Unity Fountain and outside the court, disrupting all overland travel in the vicinity of the demonstration. On 26 January, hundreds of protesters gathered in front of the US embassy in Abuja, calling for the US to intervene in the crisis.
Further such protests are possible in the coming hours and days. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out. Avoid all demonstrations and large gatherings of people on an ongoing basis, as they have the potential to turn violent. Monitor local media, follow the advice of authorities and seek safe shelter should the security environment deteriorate.
